Recorded in one room at Fish Factory Studios in London, Martin Luke Brown shares new alternate versions of ‘back 2 ya’, ‘this is me now’, ‘hello !’, and ‘animal’ - offering a more intimate, human take on some of the standout tracks from man oh man !
Built around a close-knit group of friends and collaborators - including fellow singer-songwriters James Smith and Jordan Mackampa - these versions are rooted in community, spontaneity, and the joy of making music in the room, together.
The original album explores themes of masculinity, so returning to these songs with friends brought a whole new energy to that conversation. ‘back 2 ya’, playful as ever, now feels more tender with Katt Newlon’s cello woven around the vocal. ‘this is me now’ feels rawer and a little more defiant. ‘hello !’ still rings as true as ever, with the lyric “damn, this is what I am now, that was who I was then” standing proud as an evergreen mantra. ‘animal’ is the most impassioned take of the bunch, lifted by soaring, soulful harmonies from James and Jordan.
Nathan Cox (bass), Maddy Salter (guitar), Oliver Cherrington (keys), and Mat Swales (drums) round out the band, bringing these songs a new lease of life.
If man oh man ! was the statement, these versions are the conversation around it.
